Electrical Stimulation In Cerebral Palsy

چکیده

Children and adults with cerebral palsy may have one or more of a variety of movement disorders and primary involvement of both lower limbs, one side of the body or all of the body including the muscles of speech and respiration. Because of the diversity of motor control in cerebral palsy [CP], general scales of functional ability have been developed to improve communication among medical caregivers. It is important, however, that any therapy is evaluated according to the specific functional changes in each individual with cerebral palsy. Interpretation of the literature can be difficult because researchers often have used a general, categorical scale to evaluate the significance of their intervention. For example, if the child with CP is able to walk without crutches or a walker before intervention, such as electrical stimulation, and he still walks without ambulatory aids after intervention, there is no change on the categorical scale. More specific measures might reveal that after ES the child walked with a more even stride pattern, took longer steps, maintained a more normal walking speed, used less energy to walk a measurable distance and fell down fewer times each day. These changes would not be noted unless more specific measurements were made by the investigators.

Electrical stimulation in cerebral palsy: a review of effects on strength and motor function.

CRD summary This review evaluated the efficacy of electrical stimulation in children with cerebral palsy. The authors concluded that the evidence is insufficient to provide conclusive evidence for or against the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation or threshold electrical stimulation. Despite limitations in the review methodology, the authors' conclusion is likely to reflect the evidence...

Clinical Application of Functional Electrical Stimulation to The Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy Children

We intend to apply functional electrical stimulation (FES) instead of orthoses to conditions such as hemiplegic cerebral palsy children. The purpose of this paper is to report on application of FES to the hemiplegic cerebral palsy children. The subjects were two boys (both are 6years-old) and a 7 year-old girl. They were diagnosed as spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Heel contacts were not see...

Low-Level Laser Therapy Versus Electrical Stimulation for the Management of Acute Bell\'s Palsy: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Purpose: Electrotherapy is a common intervention for the rehabilitation of Bell’s palsy. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and electrical stimulation (ES) are two therapeutic interventions for Bell’s palsy that have been proven to be superior to conventional treatments. To date, no clinical trial has compared the effectiveness of these two interventions. This pilot study aims to compare the effect...

Therapeutic functional electrical stimulation in hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

OBJECTIVE Cerebral palsy is a chronic non-progressive disorder of early onset primary effects of cerebral palsy include muscle spasm or tightness, involuntary movements, abnormal gait patterns, abnormal sensation and perception. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation can be effective means of managing increased muscle tone, of facilitating voluntary motor control, and of improving gait pattern. T...

Effect of Functional Electrical Stimulation on Gross Motor Abilities in Children with Spastic Hemiparetic Cerebral Palsy

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of electrical stimulation over the gastrocnemius-soleus muscle on gross motor skills in hemiparetic cerebral palsied children. Subjects and Methods: Thirty patients with spactic hemiparetic cerebral palsy (age ranges from three to eight years) were equally divided into two groups; control group (A) and study group (B). Group (A) received a...
